Yatañneshañ  -  part 1

Yato’ Pap

6:40 min.

This film begins with a general introduction to the five Yanesha ancestors and then presents the story of Yato’ Pap, the Father of Tobacco. In ancient times, Pap was sent from the upper world by Grandfather Yos to protect the Yanesha people from the Bad Jaguars--Capueno and his descendants. Pap recruited four powerful tobacco shamans, posted them in the four cardinal points and gave them special spiritual powers. With their help, Pap performed a series of supernatural deeds that are fundamental to Yanesha culture. The film presents a fragment of a much longer narrative.

Recorded in the Central Andean Amazon of Peru, 2005-06.
