Indigenous Teachers

5 min. clip

This film presents the work of the Training Program for Bilingual Teachers in the Peruvian Amazon (FORMABIAP), the only non-governmental program specializing in the training and accreditation of indigenous bilingual teachers in the Amazonian region. The program is sponsored by the Interethnic Association for the Development of the Peruvian Jungle (AIDESEP) with funding from international cooperation, and by the Peruvian Ministry of Education. Since its inception in Iquitos in 1988, the program has developed an approach that combines ancestral indigenous knowledges and practices with official state education curricula, resulting in a unique intercultural bilingual education methodology.
